book: across the river and into the trees

A book written by Hemingway. This book is about an old man, war vetaran, who falls in love with a very young woman, and she falls in love with him as well, and they are both deeply in love. It is a story about the love of that these 2 share and its unfortunate occurance at this particular time in their lives because the old man is dieing slowly.

The book starts up very slowly, but then builds up gradually as the novel progresses until it reaches a point where you cannot even believe you are that involved with the story. Quite interesting. It does this through the emotions that it makes you feel for two characters. Actually, what makes the story interesting is that it is such an emotionally charged novel, that it makes you want to continue to feel these emotions, kind of like a "what am I going to be feeling next thing". One thing I did not particularly care for is the military background stuff, quite unneccessary, and I could have been left out and still have been as effective without it in the story.

A very solid read.

book: the stranger

See, I will give an overview of what the story is about, but I think it would have more of an impact if you did not read any synopsis of the story. I highly recommend you just read it without knowing anything about it as this will have the greatest impact. That being said, if you are curious I will write a BRIEF overview of what the story is about.

It is about a man, a particular kind of man, one who is indifferent to the world, who experiences an "event". After this event, things happen to him and he has to "deal" with them. That is about all I can say and I bet it does not sound very interesting but trust me, this book is amazing. Truely challenges you to think about life, how you live it, right and wrong etc. etc. If you like having philosophical discussions with friends this is one book you gotta pick up and share with everyone.

The writing style is good, nothing complex, short and to the point. It being this way also adds to the overall..."atmosphere" of the book...or main character. If you ask me, this is essential reading right here.

movie: sunshine

the premise of the movie is that the sun is..."dieing" and as a result obviously Earth is dieing as well and if nothing is done about this then the world will end. Therefore, what does earth do? they send a group of scientists and austronauts to space in a ship that is loaded with a nuclear bomb the size of manhatten island to attempt to "reignite" the sun. obviously it is about their journey to accomplish this mission...and things start going crazy and all that jaze...

anyway, this movie was expectionally well done. from the music, to the performances, to sheer beauty of the movie (I highly recommend seeing this at the theaters as a small screen will do it no justice). the pacing of the movie and how it sucks you in and the suspense it creates is top notch. I have not experienced a movie of this sort of intensity, like i could almost feel the heat from the movie. the only that might be bothersome to some people is the last part of a movie, where a particular twist occurs and the movie takes a turn that was not expected. honestly this did not bother me at all i thought it was appropriate because of an underlying message it was trying to convey throughout the movie.

this is the best movie i have seen this year and was totally not expecting it to be this amazing...if you are a sci-fi fan this is a must, not discussion about it, an instant sci-fi classic. if you are not i still recommend it as it is just really good film making.
