book: Invisible Man (Ellison version)
Walden books at one of the malls I visit was going out of business and all of their books were 60% off. Almost everything was gone but there were still a few books that I picked up, one being Invisible Man. Supposedly this is one of the greatest American peices of literature so I thought, sure, why not give it a try.
The book is about a black boy/man and his adventures as a black person in the American society. From university studies to being a head speaker for a group of people called the Brotherhood who are for "rights" for humans, his journey is quite interesting. The book has some scenes that you will probably never forget and it is quite powerful. Minor flaws that I thought could have been handeled better. At some points in the book there are several scenes that are very uncessary and really add nothing to the story and there are sections in the book that could have advanced at a faster pace. The ending, in my opinion, seemed fairly rushed, as ideas stoped and he decieded it was time to end it because he had said enough. The ending is basically like, oh The Brotherhood is not what I thought, there is a riot outside, I fell down a hole and became the invisible man. All within like 40 pages.
Overall it is definately worth a read, if not just for his writing style and the verbage he uses to create imagerey. Oh, one thing I really did not understand is why the author had the main character be sexually teased throughout the whole book, I am sure there was a point to that...I will have to give it some more though.
